Parul Kapur Hinzen

New York via Beirut, Paris, London - July 1969

In reflecting on the life of my beloved father, Jatinder Nath Kapur, who passed away recently at age seventy-five, I decided to post excerpts of his memoir, which begins with his immigration to America. The decision to leave India was the most momentous of his life. My father had never seen the world outside India until the day he left for good in 1969. Below is his account of his voyage out at the age of thirty-five. My father loved parties, drinking Scotch and having a good time, so it's natur… Continue

Leaving India for Good

My father began writing his memoirs at my urging the summer before he turned seventy in 2003. He was, as I said in my earlier post, an engaging raconteur and I hoped he would preserve his stories in his own words without any intervention by me. He wrote four chapters before he strayed from the project, and they are a precise and picturesque portrait of his life in India. At some point he mailed these chapters to me, asking me to serve as his editor. I thought they were vividly written and though… Continue

I wish my father were still alive to speak

My father was a wonderful raconteur with an amazing recall of detail and atmosphere. His India is the India I know best, although I lived there till the age of eight and have been back to visit many times. My father, Jatinder Nath Kapur, was an executive in the limestone quarries in Orissa and then an oil executive in the jungles of Assam in the '50s and early '60s. His stories of the British-style social life in these remote outposts, the tense relationships between executives and labor, the hi… Continue

Hi Parul,
I am so sorry to her about your loss. I would definitely like to share and talk about your dad's journey to this country, along with my dad's. I am not much of a writer, I dreaded writing essays, but I am definitely looking forward to doing this for my dad. Was ur dad feeling sick,? Its unbelievable that we know so much about everything nowadays, but we have no clue what exactly happens after death. For me - all this just happened so suddenly, one hour he was fine, the next hour he was gone , he was only 55 yrs. About me, I am Gurman, I live in westwood, california, and I see you are from atlanta. I will definitely come back on this site a little later and read more of what u have written, and start writing more. have a good day!

". Enjoyed your piece about tennis--how good to have a racket and ball to break through barriers. ..do you teach at the university?"

I used to, in India. Then I opened a bookshop in Shillong. In 1980 made another career change and headed an export company in Taiwan. Mona and I lived in Twn for 25 years. During my semi-retirement here, I read, write a little, play tennis, volunteer a bit, and practise yoga. In case I twist myself into a jalebi, don't be surprised to get an SOS asking you to uncoil the jalebi -:)
